The Origin

Decades of Quiet
Dedication

For three generations, our family has practiced the slow, deliberate art of rug-making in the heart of Bhadohi. What began as a single loom in a sun-drenched atelier in Kashi has grown into a global beacon for heritage craftsmanship.

We do not measure our growth in metrics, but in the longevity of our pieces. A Rugs De Indiska creation is designed to outlive the room it inhabits, becoming a silent witness to a family's history.

OUR ORIGIN THE PLACE BEHIND THE CRAFT

Bhadohi

Where the craft lives.

Before a rug finds its place in the world, it begins in a place of its own.

In the plains of northern India lies Bhadohi, a region whose identity has been shaped by the art of carpet making for centuries.

Here, weaving is more than a profession. It is knowledge acquired over time, refined through practice, and carried forward by generations of skilled hands.

For Rugs De Indiska, Bhadohi is not simply where we make our rugs.

It is where our understanding of the craft begins.

The threads of our story

A Tradition Carried Through Generations

Bhadohi's carpet-weaving heritage traces its roots to the sixteenth century, when the craft developed under the influence of the Mughal era.

Across generations, its artisans have preserved a remarkable knowledge of fibres, colours, patterns, and weaving techniques.

Much of this knowledge has been passed from one maker to another, not merely through instruction, but through observation, repetition, and years of patient work.

The tools and techniques may evolve. Designs and materials may change. Yet the essential relationship between the artisan, the material, and the loom endures.

It is this continuity that gives Bhadohi its extraordinary character.

The People Behind the Craft

Every handmade rug carries the contribution of many individuals.

From the preparation of yarn and the interpretation of a design to the careful work of weaving and finishing, each stage calls for knowledge, patience, and judgement.

Some skills are learned over years. Others are refined over a lifetime.

There is a quiet intelligence in this work: knowing the tension of a thread, understanding the behaviour of a fibre, recognising when a colour or surface requires adjustment.

These decisions are seldom visible in the finished piece. Yet they are fundamental to its beauty and character.

We believe the people who possess this knowledge deserve recognition, respect, and an enduring place in the story of the objects they create.

Our Place in This Heritage

Rugs De Indiska is rooted in Bhadohi, with a family connection to rug making that extends across three generations.

This heritage shapes our understanding of materials, craftsmanship, and design.

We work at the intersection of inherited knowledge and contemporary expression, bringing the skills of traditional rug making into dialogue with the needs of architects, designers, and spaces around the world.

Our ambition is not simply to preserve familiar techniques, but to create new possibilities for them.

To explore materials and textures. To develop considered designs. To pursue exacting standards of workmanship while remaining conscious of the human skill behind every piece.

We regard this inheritance as both a privilege and a responsibility.

A Heritage That Continues

Tradition is not something that belongs only to the past.

It lives through the people who practise it, the knowledge they share, and the opportunities given to the next generation.

For us, respecting craftsmanship means recognising its origins while allowing it to develop, adapt, and remain relevant.

The future of the craft must continue to be shaped by the people who know it best.

Our work is part of that continuing story.

02 — Our People

The Hands That Remember

A rug is only as good as the soul of its weaver. Meet the artisans who bridge the gap between tradition and the modern home.

The Founder's Vision

Shri Ramji

A Legacy of Knots and Stories

Founded by Shri Ramji in 1962, Rugs De Indiska was born from a singular passion: to preserve the soul of Indian weaving while bringing it to the world's grandest rooms.

"A rug is not just a floor covering. It is a story told in knots, a piece of earth brought into the home."

His philosophy remains our anchor, guiding every hand-knotted masterpiece that leaves our atelier today.
